Introduction to the Beer Olympics Concept
Speaker 1A force to be reckoned with.
Speaker 2You could be, but you also might fail the drug test Russia anti-doping agency. We're going to have to test you.
Speaker 3The WADA, or whatever.
Speaker 2You're going to have to compete under the umbrella of what?
Speaker 1The USSR.
Speaker 2That's definitely not it.
Speaker 3It's the Olympic Federation, the Olympic Federation, russian Olympic Federation or whatever it. It's the Olympic. What's it called the Olympic Federation? Yeah?
Speaker 2yeah yeah, the Olympic Federation, russian Olympic Federation or whatever it is Not the USSR.
Speaker 1Welcome back to this week's episode of the Coaches Group Chat.
Speaker 2Episode 8.
Speaker 1I'm here with my co-host Chad, and his co-host Matt and his co-host Matt Not your co-host and everyone's favorite producer, Bobby. Bobby's here.
Speaker 3Give them snacks.
Speaker 1We got a great episode for you guys today.
Speaker 2Ariel prepared a docket.
Speaker 1I did, I actually prepared a docket in .5 seconds when we decided today we're recording today Okay, sounds good, and I sent a docket right off the bat and I went hard on my first one and I'm stoked on it.
Speaker 3I went real hard. I was impressed I got the text eight to ten hours ago. I was like, oh, normally it's like eight to ten seconds.
Speaker 1It's like recording. Go man, this is I don't know. I wasn't even thinking about it, like I didn't have this in my mind beforehand and I'd been waiting on it. I just heard we were recording and thought who should we put on our beer olympics team in college volleyball?
Speaker 3like any normal person would think these are the questions I get asked all the time exactly it's so weird, exactly. Thank God we are finally tackling the tough, the hard-hitting questions, the tricky subjects, right yeah.
Speaker 1So we've come up with rules. The rules are we each had to pick two players and one coach to be on our Beer Olympics team.
Speaker 2Four-person Beer Olympics team.
Speaker 1If we were competing and Chad brought up up a great question are you competing to have fun? Are you competing to win. A lot of ways to win beer olympics there are a lot of ways to win beer.
Speaker 2That's for us to decide and we can explain our answers as we uh, as we go okay, so we're gonna do a draft we've kind of prepared.
Speaker 1but we are also thinking that we're gonna get swooped on some people here, right, so we don't really have backup, so we're going to get swooped on some people here, right, so we don't really have backup, so we're just going to riff a little bit. Matt, do you want to go?
Speaker 3That's fine.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 3I'll go first.
Speaker 1Give me the first round draft pick First round draft pick Must be a player correct. We'll go coaches first Whoa plot twist.
Speaker 3I like coaches late.
Speaker 2Okay, we're going players first Thank goodness, coach is late. Okay, we're going. Players first Thank goodness, all right, my first round draft pick, the number one overall pick in the coaches group, chat Beer Olympics. The inaugural draft, the inaugural To be competed at a later date.
Speaker 3I'm selecting you guys ready for this? If it's my first pick, I'm going to kill you.
Speaker 2I hope I'm saying his name right. Makua Marumoto, the outside hitter from concordia irvine, what? The hawaiian dude with the big tats. He's massive. He's my number one pick because he's come up, came up and talked to me a couple times. Number one, he's a homie. He's a straight chiller. So I know he's gonna be a good dude, but but he's got the size. Ariel has a good quote Beer Olympics, there's chuggers and there's shooters and I think he might kind of bring both to the table. He can outlast. He's got a good size on him. No idea, no, I know, I just can tell I could sense it. I could sense it when I talk to him. That was my number one pick. Okay, uh, that was my number one pick.
Speaker 1Okay, concordia irvine, that's my guy I like it sure, I like it. Okay, over to you number two pick.
Speaker 2Uh, nikolov is my number two pick for sure you're going, nikolov they've been drinking since they were like three years old.
Speaker 1There's no question he's been like he's trained yeah, he's been training like that suggested an easy pick the age threshold over there.
Speaker 3It's just, it's no, we're not.
Speaker 1We're trying not to pick underage people in the United States, but international kids don't count.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, because I was going to say he's 18. Yeah, yeah, he's fine Celebrating those V&L wins. I mean, come on now, he's totally fine. That's fair. It's like Javi, puerto Rico, yes, when.
Speaker 1Javi got in trouble when we were.
Speaker 3For winning the 13 and under yeah, yeah, no, I mean in college, when javi got in trouble.
Speaker 2He went into the drinking age in puerto rico is 18.
Speaker 1He went into the athletic department was like but the drinking age is 18 in puerto rico. It's fine.
Speaker 2And they were like okay you don't play in puerto rico.
Speaker 1Welcome to stockton, california exactly, but okay, so so I got nikola bad chad's the snake, so let's hear Chad's one and two number one obviously had to go from the grittiest team.
Speaker 3I don't know why you didn't do that. Lead setter captain in charge running the show Donovan okay sure.
Speaker 2I love that.
Speaker 3You need some leadership you gotta make sure everybody's doing the right stuff, participate in the right events, all that good stuff.
Speaker 1Sure, I like that too.
Speaker 3And he's gritty and there's no way that guy can't chug beers Great first pick. Yeah, I'm really happy with that actually.
Speaker 1I can't believe you didn't pick a Northridge kid as your number one.
Speaker 3I'm pretty embarrassed for you.
Speaker 2I'm so embarrassed for you. When I think beer Olympics, I'm thinking I need size.
Speaker 3I Do not bring this conversation right now.
Speaker 1Neil, you know what.
Speaker 3We were all there Keep going Round two Snaking it back. First pick of the second round, first pick of round two Went with the second grittiest team, the Lopes, obviously Going big time.
Speaker 3Redshirt senior carter rogers okay and the reason I'm doing this. One bigger guy, a lot of experience, he's been there, redshirt senior not his first rodeo also competes at altitude, not with grand canyon, but he's from denver and so he's been training and he can, he can just he can go the distance when you when you need a way to well thought out, you're welcome, right? This is what happens when you give us the docket sorry okay.
Speaker 3I had plenty of time to think about this, yeah, so he's gonna be able to compete in those events later in the afternoon when everyone else is winding down. No problem at all.
Speaker 2I love your rationale, I love it. Yeah, it's factually correct, yeah, all right, ariel, second pick in the second round for you, good luck.
Speaker 1I just tried to think of who the largest person is.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's what I was going with, so McQuiggan ought to be up there. He was in my list also but it wasn't who I chose. It wasn't who I chose.
Speaker 3That's who I chose.
Speaker 2Genuinely good decision. My next choice Big body. Big body, it's like Andre the Giant out there.
Speaker 3You don't know what you're going to play, but you're going to win something I got.
Speaker 1Nikola, I got me and then I got McGuigan. We're good.
Speaker 2Compensating.
Speaker 1You're compensating.
Speaker 2You're freaking, nikki, or something You're like? Just the tiniest, tiniest females out there well, yeah, it's not nikki.
Speaker 1I love nikki, but I've got a different we all know nikki could win this too all right, all right.
Speaker 2My second round pick. This comes from the pedigree right. When it comes down to it, sometimes it's just in your blood, it's in your dna your ability to compete at beer olympics, and I know for a fact say more that lu Luke McFall would be an absolute killer addition to the Beer Olympics squad.
Speaker 1I agree with that.
Speaker 2Because Aaron McFall and his mom, Lisa McFall, are great competitors at Beer Olympics.
Speaker 1I've seen it up close and personal. They have competed in a Beer Olympics with us before.
Speaker 2And I think the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and Luke McFall? Therefore, he would be a shooter and a chugger, and that's the unicorn that you're looking for.
Speaker 1Luke is just the life of the party, so I applaud that pick. I think that that's great, thank you.
Speaker 2Now let me go to my coach, if I may. I need to round out my team. I think I've got size, I've got the chugging, I've got a unicorn that can shoot and drink in Luke McFall. I'm less of a chugger but I'm definitely a gamer. I can I can shoot, so I'm going to play there. So I need someone who's going to be rounded and out. Mainly I need vibes. So I'm going vibe edition here. This is a, this is a glue guy coach. I'm going Brad Rostrader.
Speaker 2That's so funny, for the humor, for the comedy, to bring the family together. I would love to drink 22 beers with brad rostrader on a sunday morning. You know like that would be the perfect addition to my team. So there you go.
Speaker 1That's how I'm rounding out my squad, ariel, over to you uh, I am going very on brand for my team right now and I'm going milan thank god I had a backup, but I was yeah, I've got milan that's a layup right there, uh he can handle nikola for me great easy. He's also been drinking beer since he was three years old.
Speaker 2This is like good yeah, I think I'm gonna look at all these games and be like what is this?
Speaker 1I definitely went, I went to win I did go for winning beer olympics. I didn't go for. Like we're just here for a good time.
Speaker 2Yeah, I'm trying to mix it. I went, I went, winning that's nice, that's good for you. I'm trying to win, so I've got eastern block yeah, we're all right, chad man, I did Follow that up.
Speaker 3You had Milan. He was my top. He was my top coach. Luckily, I'm really happy that I get to share my second, because it's also an excellent. This is years of experience, one of the longest tenured coaches in the game.
Speaker 2I went Mark Pavlik.
Speaker 3That's wild, that's vibes also and that's just, that's penn state for decades. I'm not, I'm not worried about him running at the end or anything like that. We're not asking him to do that, but tactically I mean, he's just, he's just gonna have it you guys are both gonna have a lot more fun at vera living.
Speaker 1I am yeah Well, you're not going to speak. The language is your problem, it's true.
Speaker 3But yeah, have have was the the easy number two. I like that yeah.
Speaker 2Wow, I mean honestly, can we make this happen? That's a great sound in beer Olympics.
Speaker 3We got to go do it in like Europe because Nikola is 18.
Speaker 2But you, know beyond that. I think everything else kind of checks the box, Pick a date, I don't know.
Speaker 1All right, what else? Yeah, queen of the dog. Great, I can't read that. That's a great start.
Speaker 3Great starting question. I can't read that far away. It only gets worse from here, I guess.
Speaker 2Would you like me to move that closer for you?
Speaker 1Thank, you oh the ABCA rankings.
Speaker 3I heard there was beef, exactly.
Speaker 2I'm boycotting. These don't exist. They don't have an allergic reaction to the ABCA rankings.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1What pissed you off the most this week?
Speaker 2What pissed me off the most this week? It just pisses me off that you don't get to see who they're voting for. When you don't have ownership, people just get lazy, nothing changes.
Speaker 1What was the laziest about nothing changed.
Speaker 2Penn State at 20 still pisses me off. Sorry, Paff.
Speaker 3Not what he's being recruited for anymore.
Speaker 2They shouldn't be in the top 20. Ngit is also right there. They just lost to Penn State. That was one. I think McKendree should be in the top 10. That's just where I'm at on things. The only teams they've lost to Number 10 right now is I don't even know.
Speaker 1Let's pull up these horse shit rankings.
Speaker 2But I can give you what I think it should be. I can give you my top 10. But first and foremost, can we just make the announcement that from here on out, we are making to be named TBD. We have a couple great options out there right now, but the Coaches Group chat will be doing a poll each week Because, quite honestly, fuck the ABCA poll. It's bullshit. We're moving on. We're going to our own rankings, matt, to the dark side.
Speaker 1Matt has gone, very rogue rankings.
Speaker 2Matt to the dark side. Matt has gone very rogue. Would you like me to go my top 10 first, or do you guys have anything you'd like to share on your avca thoughts, because I think stanford should drop back also. That was another one that I was I was bumming on. Oh see, son, at 10 yes, he's on, cracked into the top 10, as they should so you okay.
Speaker 1So who you think stanford should be back and I I would.
Speaker 2Here's. Here's my top 10. I I agree with the majority of what they had. I'd do a little swaps long beach at one, ucla at two, because they took down irvine twice, irvine at three. I'd move usc ahead of hawaii at four, hawaii at five, csun at six. I think we bump CSUN up. The only loss they've got is two USC. Then we're going to BYU at seven. Loyola would be at eight. I'd put McKendree right behind them at nine and I'd bump Pepperdine back to ten. Stanford would be just outside the top ten at eleven. That would be my current rankings as they stand. Don't get me wrong.
Speaker 2I think the Kendrick could drop at any point, as they should, if they lose.
Speaker 1I think that makes sense and I don't think that Stanford deserves to be in the top 10 right now.
Speaker 2Don't get me wrong. I love the Stanford boys. This is a tough love situation. You lose to the Masters you're dropping. You have to drop. I don't care if you didn't start all your starters. You lose to the Masters. You're dropping, you have the majority of your group in there. You got to take care of that win. You can't do that. You're moving back. Yeah, I agree, tough shit. We move forward. There you go.
Speaker 3Yeah, I don't know. I agree, I think with all that stuff I'd probably kick Pepperdine out of the time before Stanford. Why? Because I like Stanford more All right fair. Don't push me.
Speaker 2At least you're putting your name on it.
Speaker 3Fine, yeah, I mean I don't. I think the word is just lazy on some of this stuff. Yeah, Just like it's just like oh, you get this email and you're like oh, man, like I got a, all right, just whatever.
Speaker 1I don't like conference biases. That's the other part of this is like there is a cover for it and there's conference biases, so it's like it was also named brand bias. That's the only reason Penn state's like people don't give mckendry the top 10 because they're like what's a mckendry?
Speaker 2okay, that's like all fun and games to say but then like, beta bay gets ranked higher because it's beta bay, so like we can't just like sure exactly why you need an elo algorithm.
Speaker 3Agreed, completely agreed yeah, it's just human bias yeah, that's how that's, understandably.
Speaker 2Understandably so, especially when you're dealing so things you don't know about.
Speaker 1So we're saying that we're all about human bias. Human bias is fine, as long as the human is willing to stand up in front of everybody and say this is what I voted for.
Speaker 2Yeah, and then you get yelled at if it's bad, exactly, you take ownership and then, yeah, that way, that's what's the easiest way to get people to actually pay attention, because if you're paying attention, attention, you see the results that are coming in. You're gonna make adjustments, you're still gonna have your bias just like all of us do, just like chad just admitted himself that wasn't biased, I've got my c-sum bias, obviously but that's what am I, what's my bias? What's your bias?
Speaker 1I don't have any serbians bulgarians do I have any bias in college volleyball.
Speaker 2Yeah, stanford is definitely a bias for you.
Speaker 1Sure, but like get out of the top 10. I need to figure out what my bias, my actual bias, is. It's a place.
Speaker 3It's called Sofia, bulgaria. That's your current bias right now.
Speaker 1Yeah, Go Europeans. Yeah, I agree. Okay, cool so we're doing our rankings now.
Speaker 3Who's voting for it? You, me.
Speaker 2We're going to put it out there, we're going to put it into the ether and see who else wants to put their name on it.
Speaker 1We have one board seat up for debate.
Speaker 2I would love to see any college coach that wants to put their name on it. Come, put your name on it.
Speaker 3Theo Edwards, you've been summoned.
Speaker 2Brad Rostrader, you're a Vibes guy. Come on, vibes guy, let's see your rankings. Let's see you legitimately put it out there for the world to see.
Speaker 1Or just calling people out.
Speaker 2I invite any college coach that votes in the ABCA, to put your votes out there for the public to see.
Speaker 1Okay, so that's Matt's version. My version is assistant coaches. I want to make a poll for all the assistant coaches Spencer Wickets, Actually you know, what. I don't know about that. I don't want assistant coaches to feel pressure. Their jobs are dependent on things. I don't want them to be.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, I don't want them to be yeah, yeah, I don't want to get in heat. Why do you think the head coaches don't want to show their votes? Because they don't want anything to reflect back on their jobs.
Speaker 1But the assistant coaches are making like $19,000 a year. That's not fair.
Speaker 2With all that big men's college volleyball money, the head coaches you need to put your name on it, sorry, okay. College volleyball money the head coach.
Speaker 1I know you need to put your name on it sorry.
Speaker 2Okay, so we'll let any send some emails.
Speaker 3We'll push them. We'll put some feelers out there. We'll see if anyone wants to step up to the plate as we move on.
Speaker 1The next item on the docket is matt hoolahan's instagram account it's a problem, he's a problem. Make it stop let's just address the elephant in the room. Matt, is the elephant get out of my room why?
Speaker 3there's so many fucks in your all your videos it's like a lot of fucks, so many fucks.
Speaker 2Like a hard q too.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's not like a ck, it's a hard oh um, matt, why don't you give everybody a little bit of insight into your uh?
Speaker 3split personality disorder.
Speaker 2Uh, yeah, uh, a lot of commentary. There's been been doing a lot of voiceovers as of as of late the way, uh, my favorite, so one of my favorite instagram follows of all time is a. It's a podcast group of guys called who's next sports and they do these hysterical highlight video mashups. So 1000, just a. I'm a teamu knockoff version of them and I find it hysterical. But I just wanted to apply it to volleyball and I was like I'm gonna make one of these videos, let's just see how it goes, and it kind of it kind of hit and I got a comment on. I got I got two comments on like the first one I posted being like I have never watched men's volleyball before but for some reason, I watched this entire video and I was like ding, ding, ding, I think we're on to something here, um.
Speaker 2so yeah, I just kind of continued to mess around with it and now I just make videos about my friends Taylor Averill and Benjamin patch and Moses Wagner and Vogel getting some ass, some ass laps.
Speaker 3How'd you even find?
Speaker 2that, like I was. I just went back and watched it on volumetrics and saw that, saw that play happen and was like, oh, that's perfect, that's what I want to. I'm going to showcase that. But now, anytime I don't do like a surprise edit, I get a bunch of people commenting me like where's the surprise edit? I'm like I'm allowed to do other things too. Ok, let me. Let me have my time here. I just want to do my little recap videos. They're going to be really blown away when I start nerding out on club director stuff. They're going to be like, well, this is not what I fucking signed up for. Unfollow. So yeah, that's my current instagram split personality you seem like you're having fun.
Speaker 2I am having fun. It's a lot of fun, that's. That's all that matters to me because it's a good time.
Speaker 3I need to stop following you, probably, but like I love that you're having fun I'm actually very glad that you're doing it why is?
Speaker 1that because I think that it uh gives people more of an insight. This is a deeper reason, but I think it gives people more of an insight of you haven't always been the club director that you are now. You used to be this shit uh, shit, talking outside hitter that like like always was like fucking with people, yeah, and like that hasn't been a part of your identity or brand for a really long time, and so I think that that version of you coming out in this is like a good thing for people to see. I think it's relatable and I think it's a.
Speaker 1I think it's a cool thing for you to bring back.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's very fair. Yeah, For those of you who don't know, we're married and so you've known me for a long time on a deeper level. But yeah, when we took over the club, so much was immediately like must look professional.
Speaker 1Also, I was also telling you grow up. Like too. There was a lot of it that was like like every, let everybody get your shit together like grow up and we need to pretend that we're older than we are, and so, like that version of like, you kind of had to be like put away a little bit more, but I'm glad that life is a circle.
Speaker 2And now we're back to the immature now we're reverting back.
Speaker 3Now he has a mustache, yeah.
Speaker 1No, I think it's a good thing. I think that it's a real version of you.
Speaker 2Yeah, I mean, a lot of it is how I speak with my friends, and so that's part of what we always try and do is just communicate, like that's what the Coach's Group chat is.
Speaker 1I do think you might need to turn it back a little bit.
Speaker 2sometimes my dad, I got to share this story.
Speaker 1My dad didn't text me.
Speaker 2He didn't call me. He sent me an email.
Speaker 3Excuse me, sir.
Speaker 2He gave me a great my dad, such a coach, such a coach. He gave me a compliment sandwich. He's like Matt, I love you and I love what you have built at Beta Bay. I love you and I love what you have built at Beta Bay, but please be aware of how your language comes across on social media. It's a lot of like I said before, I love you and I'm very proud of what you have built and how you communicate things to all of the people out in the volleyball world. Love you, dad. Bye. So yes, I uh, I'm.
Speaker 1I'm finding the balance of, uh, of my immaturity and I also think that that there's a lot of people that don't understand that like in social media oh yeah, like. It needs to happen more. It's not like this filtered version like instagram or tiktok or all this stuff is not supposed to be this like super curated thing anymore. It's real like and it's like.
Speaker 2This is how you I'm not trying to hide how I talk- no, I'm trying to like and of course, I also don't think that it's there's stuff that's like this is funny, haha jokes yeah, like we're just we're having fun out here yeah it's not.
Speaker 1It's not that deep, totally um but for every one person that doesn't agree with one thing, there are 10 people that do agree or whatever. Like there is. I did a video about.
Speaker 2I also. I will stand by this. I'm tired of people hitting people in the face and then going under the net to apologize. Yeah, I'm tired of it Like stop, and I did that video and I had a person send me a direct message being like I got hit in the face by a volleyball and had a horrible concussion for three months and you should stop glorifying headshots or whatever. I was like all right, all right. You literally can't win, like I wasn't glorifying headshots.
Speaker 2I was just saying stop making our sport look soft by going and apologizing every single time.
Speaker 1I've ever made a joke about any sort of like split personality disorder that I have or whatever. People come after me and my message is saying that I like you need to stop and like that's an actual diagnosed thing. It's like I got it. Like comedy is comedy, relax, like everybody. Like the whole cancel for you being offended by one thing that happens. Okay, whatever, brush it off. People talk the way they want. It's all good, but maybe turn it back a little bit with your Less fucks.
Speaker 2That's the takeaway I have here.
Speaker 1Honestly, whatever Update or recap.
Speaker 3You guys want me to take this one, or do you want to kick us off? How about from afar?
Speaker 1Chad. What did Capitol Hill look like from afar?
Speaker 3It looked like a lot of people talking to your 18s kids and a lot of running presidents. A lot of people talking to your 18s kids and a lot of running presidents. A lot of you standing.
Speaker 1They were actually only there for two hours.
Speaker 3Yeah, but like.
Speaker 1But it looked like they were there for the entire time?
Speaker 3Yeah, it should. A lot of you standing talking to Kylan from afar, A little bit of on the move. I think that was the escalator.
Speaker 1Sure, but mostly stationary.
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 1Bobby, how did Capitol Hill look from afar?
Speaker 2The only thing I saw about Capitol Hill was Peter Criss' Instagram story with 700,000. Oh yeah.
Speaker 1He was the only one that did the repost of all the posts. He did every single one.
Speaker 2If I did that, the boys were all about it.
Speaker 1I think that they were surprised. They had to have been surprised. That's kind of why I was glad they were there, but it was. Can you lay it?
Speaker 2out for the listeners of what happened?
Speaker 1here, Okay, so my family runs a tournament and I go back every year and help them and have done the content and social media for the event for the last decade and over the last, uh, I think since last year. I think that there was a couple of kids on my team made the comment of like I want to go to that. And so this year I made it an open invite to all of them. Of like if you guys come, I'll like have you guys work for the staff and like you guys can like we'll have you guys do anything. Like we've got we've got room for you guys. And so four of them worked at the event and one of them was coaching in the event. So I had five of them there, um, and it was like I mean it's, it was like chaos is the easiest way to describe it. It was. I mean they were taking pictures the entire time. Like it was yeah, it was wild, wild it was really fun to watch it was the coolest thing.
Speaker 1Yeah, it was just, it was. I mean, it's happened, I don't know. It's something that, like I'm trying to navigate, of like how it was much different for me this year than it was for any other year because, like I can't go outside without like people taking wanting to little girls and stuff, and it was super fun. Um, I also couldn't have like a normal conversation on the floor ever, so that was a little bit difficult. Um, it's just like a different experience now. But like we had this like meet and greet that I showed up to at the awards area, whatever, and like like packed, like absolutely packed, and like I couldn't even believe it. And then like was standing there and watching and like they are all off to the side and all of the girls are like taking pictures with them, and all I wanted to do like the whole time was like just watch what was going on there, because it was just the cutest thing.
Speaker 2I've ever seen. It was really funny watching Riley and Hallie watch all that, because they kind of dealt with it last year, but this year they realize it more than people taking photos with you, but then also people taking photos with the boys. Hallie, who loves Peter, onriel's team, was like getting jealous and so she was like just staying and she was getting in all the photos with peter and like, uh, it was just fun to watch them, just how. Yeah, the whole the whole environment.
Speaker 1Also, like we all go to these tournaments for a full weekend and you, uh, who you are before the weekend starts and then what you go through until after the weekend, it feels like you're a whole different person by the end. And so for the kids that were there for them to go through that and like just see what it was like on the other side of it, see how the event is run on the other side of it, they were so tired. I've never seen them as tired as they were at that event.
Speaker 2Yeah, Um it's a different it's a just, you work different muscles in your brain. I don't think they've ever seen the amount of stimulation that you go through.
Speaker 1I mean, they were, they were so tired and, yeah, it was just a really really special thing for them to. I don't know what it would have been like if all of the girls weren't taking pictures of them the whole time, because it really was, I think, worth it for all of them because they were getting so much attention and so, for as tired as they were, it was awesome. If they weren't getting all that attention, I don't know how it would have been.
Speaker 2I'm never coming back, they're like. This is the worst Like can I give a little micro shout out?
Speaker 3Yeah.
Speaker 2So I sent Chad the video. Kylan captured it. But uh, we were all at the social media booth and Ariel's taking photos of the. Uh, a bunch of girls and a dad came up to me on the side and he like, looks at me and he just turns his phone it was so wild he's got the coaches group chat, episode six, up on his phone he's like this is you he's like I, I'm literally was I'm listening to you right now.
Speaker 1Oh my gosh oh, episode six. A banger, I mean, I get it on video kylan's filming me this whole time and like the guy comes over and he just like turns his phone. He was just listening to it.
Speaker 2He was just yeah, he's like he had his AirPod on.
Speaker 1He was listening to this podcast and I and then Matt was like hey, look, and like I, and he shows me and I was like, oh my gosh, immediately we're nationwide baby.
Speaker 2So to our guy out there yeah, we love you, our one guy.
Speaker 1We appreciate you. Yeah, that's what it's like. You're one of our tens of listeners get into the ground floor.
Speaker 3It's a niche kind of product.
Speaker 1It was so cute though yeah it was awesome it was a really really great weekend it was.
Speaker 2it was minus the kids getting sick and we were supposed to go to Mexico. That didn't happen. That's a story for another podcast, don't worry about that.
Speaker 1Whatever, but it was cool for the kids on my team.
Speaker 2CHC was a great one, for sure.
Speaker 1Anything happen in the women's volleyball world.
Speaker 3All I can think of is when you were, like announced that she retired and I'm just like, oh, I think of this one, when you were like announced that she retired.
Speaker 1Did anybody die recently?
Speaker 2No, no deaths, no retirements that I'm aware of.
Speaker 1I think the real question in women's volleyball is what are all the Florida players going to do?
Speaker 2They made their hiring decision.
Speaker 1They made their hiring decision. They made their hiring decision and I think the girls have kind of like put themselves in an interesting position of like hire who we want, now they didn't, and now they're like whoa do we, what do we do? So I'm interested to see how that plays out.
Speaker 2Can I break some news?
Speaker 1Oh yeah.
Speaker 2On the on the pod.
Speaker 1We have a men's opening.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, Chrisris did that happen today? That happened today, cypher cypher.
Speaker 1Thank you, chris stepping down.
Speaker 2Okay, from concordia, their interesting assistant coach is stepping in to be the interim head. Uh, but yeah, I got word from a reliable source. Why I don't know, I'm not going to speculate. This is a breaking news concordia is a revolving door yeah, I mean it is a tough, it's just a tough place. Yeah right, like support wise, it's definitely on the lower compensation scale. Um, it's an expensive place to get kids into. You don't get a lot there, so second head coach out mid-season uh mid-season yeah.
Speaker 2Wild. I don't know what the circumstances are If he is moving into a different coaching position, if he's out of the coaching ranks altogether, whatever it may be, but yes heard today that that is a step that is taking place. And then we did actually have another men's volleyball coach that got poached to the women's side. Uc San Diego's assistant coach.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, she's a USC now.
Speaker 2Now at USC Blossom Sato.
Speaker 1I love how this podcast treats women's volleyball like the majority of the country treats men's volleyball as like this kind of afterthought. Yeah, that's like, it's like our children we always talk about men's volleyball and then sometimes we're like, oh yeah, women's volleyball, but then we go right back to men's volleyball really, really quickly our kids.
Speaker 2Our kids literally think that volleyball is a boy sport.
Speaker 1They have no other every time they see girls play volleyball, even at the tournament, they're like, wow, this is all girls I'm like yes, this is all girls. I'm like, yes, this is all girls. What are you talking?
Speaker 2about. Yeah, yeah, they're shook. We took them when the first time we ever took them to Stanford women's game. They were like we're going to the girl, they have a girls volleyball team, so weird yeah that's.
Speaker 1But that's the world we're in. So women's volleyball. Okay, I will say my favorite, my favorite moment from capitol hall. Really quickly, we splice this in here. Yep, no, I mean, you can, we can end whatever. Uh, we don't have anything else in the back, I don't think. Uh, riley, these little girls come over and they're trying to take a picture or whatever, and riley's over doing bag tags and they start talking to her and I see them like having a conversation and so I'm like listening and they go do you play volleyball? And she goes, yeah, and I was like, what are you talking about? You?
Speaker 3play volleyball. She was like yeah, I play volleyball.
Speaker 1And it was like she was trying to impress these little girls. It was like that is the cutest thing I've ever seen. It was. It was awesome yeah thing I've ever seen. It was it was awesome.
Speaker 2Yeah, she was like looking up, she was like yeah, eyes wide, totally not in her head.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah it was really cute. She doesn't have a lot of interactions with girls volleyball players so I was like that's awesome yeah, she also just loves kids that are older than her too.
Speaker 2She's like this is amazing. You're talking to me, uh, but chad, give us your. You had a woman's volleyball update. I was I.
Speaker 3I was going to say they announced the ABCA first serve teams and those matchups.
Speaker 2Yeah, so the Vanderbilt's in it. Right, and he's in it yeah.
Speaker 1Corbelli making it Russell. What are we talking about?
Speaker 3This is so they started doing this, or they brought this back last year and it was like Wisconsin and Nebraska and whatever, but it was like the opening weekend that you can compete for women's volleyball so this is like the last weekend of August-ish.
Speaker 3And so they made it bigger this year. So they start in Lincoln and Nebraska plays Pitt, stanford plays Florida, on Saturday, penn State, creighton, kansas and Ulmer take on Vandy for the first time in their season, and then Sunday, nebraska, stanford, florida, pitt, and then they move on. Monday they go up to Sioux Falls and South Dakota. I don't know exactly why, but Texas A&M plays Minnesota and then Kansas plays Penn State up there.
Speaker 1Okay, so it's just the ABCA putting on the event.
Speaker 3It is, yeah, like I think in. I don't know if they do like all of it or how exactly it goes, but I know in lincoln they're doing it in pba, like the big where they play basketball, the pinnacle bank, um, rather than devaney and they're trying to make it a big big thing and get a lot of eyeballs on the sport early in the year, kind of thing cool.
Speaker 1So if you want us to come out and be there for that, let us know I'll be there, are you?
Meet the Draft Participants and Their Strategy
Speaker 3I booked my ticket this morning, oh really well, I thought about going this past year because, like Volley Station does some stuff so you're going to Volley Station, not with us do you want to go to Lincoln during the first weekend of Bay to Bay practices?
Speaker 1yeah, probably great, come on down, okay cool yeah, there's no direct flights that stinks, I know but you gotta go to denver first uh, yeah, san jose denver, yeah, dang, that's cool though it's like a.
Speaker 3It's like college basketball yeah, so you can book it in nine months just so I know I'll text matt yeah I like it.
Speaker 2That's a college basketball runs a bunch of those style of events at the beginning of the year too, just like you bring a lot of top teams together in a different, like you know, neutral site, different neutral site type of a place.
Speaker 1Bring the top podcasters in to cover it.
Speaker 3Sponsored by Volleyball World. There you go.
Speaker 2All those D-list celebrities.
Speaker 1I love that I keep making a plug for us to cover things. And I'm not trying to be a reporter, I'm just trying to go to cover things and I'm like, not trying to be a reporter, I'm just trying to go to fun things.
Speaker 2If I can say, fuck a lot, I'll be a reporter.
Speaker 3We could report on it after the fact, from this couch that's true, and we're gonna do that. No matter, nobody can tell us not to do that, I'll let you know how it was, if you don't make it.
Speaker 1Join us next week for another episode of Chad's podcast with the hula hands.
Speaker 2It's the best. Adios.
