Tournament expansion has done its job. We got the matchups we were looking for. Epic games across the board, minus Loyola and Long Beach. So we'll take one dud for three pretty damn good games. And I'm I'm coming off of a high, not gonna lie. We said we needed to get right into the studio onto the couch to record this week's episode. So uh so here we are.

After the Irvine uh who did they play? UCLA game. Uh I kept saying, like, man, when was the last time I saw a game like this? And then I looked at Instagram and everybody was comparing it to Texas, AM, and Nebraska. Yep. And I was like, you're right, it was literally in the women's season. Yep.

Blood Delay And The Sport Coat

But yeah, I mean that's the thing, but I've never seen a game end and then end again, so that's different.

The there was a weekend full of controversy, and I think that's one of the reasons why it was so entertaining. You had the Penn State versus Irvine in the in the what do you call that? The playing game.

The most stoppage time I've ever seen in a fifth set ever.

It was insanity. But number one, of course, not to not to toot our own horn, but we called it Pav Magic was alive and well. Everyone thought the Penn State would be nothing there, and sure enough, they they came out swinging, forced the fifth. The right side's a stud. Yeah, freshman right side that got subbed in halfway through like set two or into set three, and he played great. Yep. But they're up 6-3 off of a facial of Cameron Costi, and sure enough, the floodgates opened, and blood comes pouring. And we've got a big old delay. There's blood on the floor. You got Niffin pulling his sport coat.

My favorite thing. Sorry, let's let's just hit the sport coat story a little bit here. So he covers the he covers the jersey, make sure there's no blood there. The next night against UCLA, they're like a delay for sweat on the floor, moisture, and he just pulls off the coat and he starts wiping his wiping the sweat with his coat. Cardio biohazard, so whatever, it's fine. The best part of all of it, because he wears this to every game, his son in the stands wears a matching miniature version. It's the cutest thing ever. And in the in the when we played at Irvine this year in the high five line, his son always joins and he's right in front of NIF, and you're just high-fiving this little game. It's so good. It's so good.

So the sport court has some magic to it for sure as well. Can we just talk about the biggest conspiracy about Cameron Cosby getting hit in the face? Yes, let's hear it. What I heard, I saw him lean into it. I think he I think he was game theorying it out, and I think he stepped into that pitch.

Pepperdine Ball State Touch Debate

Sometimes, you know, you think you think something's just hilarious, and I was cracking myself up with it, and then yeah, it just doesn't land quite as well. And you're like, oh, maybe I'm just slightly autistic. That's right. All right, but let's let's get back to the the the meat of this. The the weekend of controversy. I think that truly was one of the best parts of this entire dynamic was that there was just things that made people angry, right? There was things that was just uh there was so much tension and friction. You take it to even the Pepperdine ball state game, fifth set, ball state comes out hot, then Pepperdine comes back swinging, they push ahead, they had two match points, they were up 14 to 12. And at one point, they had a challenge where it was uh their outside hitter went back, ripped a ball down middle back, and seemingly maybe we'll we'll we'll post it up here for you guys to take a look at it.

UCLA Irvine Call That Flipped

Not that one, because that one, this one has gotten completely overshadowed by the UCLA, which we'll get to. But yeah, ball state, it looks like there could be a touch on Patrick Rogers that probably that ball is spinning with a lot of a lot of RPMs, and then it it slows up a little bit. And then it doesn't have as many spins anymore. Yeah, but that gets called, it gets reviewed, they call it out. Ball state ends up uh flipping flipping the script and they take it 16-14 on two Patrick Rogers aces. So that was that was the second match of like some controversy. And then Daniel, we have the controversy of all controversies. We were Ariel and I were with uh the Caseres's, we were watching it, Chad was there as well with Lacey. So we were together. I want to know what was your what was your reaction watching this final few points of the the fifth set for Irvine and you say maybe maybe paint the picture for the for the stands here.

I mean, we're we're in my house, we were all enthralled by the match. My my two sons who are just getting into volleyball now were enjoying it and were hyped and cheering and into it. And when UCLA won the match, we were like, it's over. And NIF challenges, and we're like, oh, he has to because it's for the match. He has to. And they show the replay and we're like, oh yeah, no touch, game over. And when the ref gestured touched, we all just gasped, like all of us, and we're just like, What? And then we saw things kind of just crumble, and we were like, What? And we were all freaking out because my kids know Cameron Costi. They've spent a lot of time with him, and we were happy, but also very shocked by what had happened.

I have a question about that really quick. Um have your have you noticed that your kids have had a game yet where they like you know that they remember it? Like, do they talk about any of the games that they grew up at or things that because I wonder at which point because every kid uh maybe they don't even know what it is yet, or you don't, but do you see a spark in kids when they see something that is like and I can imagine that game, people watching that game, it may have sparked something in kids being like, Whoa, like they won't forget watching that.

Yeah, they watched a lot of Stanford matches, but that is probably the match that they will remember the most. I guess. Remember when this happened? Yeah, yeah, they'll bring it up for sure in the future.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. My childhood one was uh the black the blackout at Rec Hall or Irvine versus Penn State and the lights went off. Oh yeah. I think it was the national championship game.

And I was like, uh this is insanity, but the TV was still on, and so everyone's like spectating. It was wild. Uh all right, but we gotta bring it back to this one because uh Chad Chad's fiance tried to get up and leave, and I think a lot of people were probably like, oh yeah, it's over.

Well, you know multiple people that turned it off when like UCLA done turned off.

We got text messages to people being like, Yeah, I turned literally turned it off. But I want Chad's perspective here, because I I I posted my my reaction live in person. I mean, I'm sitting there. Yeah, we're all in the I keep on forgetting that you were literally in that video too. Sorry, I was in my own world.

Why Fans Need Replay Transparency

Clearly, yeah. No, um I I I don't fault the people who turned it off. I mean, like you see the replay, you're like, okay, cool, like, unless you wanted to watch them shake hands, which like sometimes you know, someone gonna hit somebody. We don't know. But yeah, I mean, this is my my question for all of this, right? Is like, why why don't we show this, you know, in in arena? Why isn't this you know confirmed by you know showing the replay camera to the audience at home on on TV? Um, because no angle that we saw, I mean, obviously, like you got video from Nicoba and some of these guys, like we didn't see anything that looked like a plausible touch. So I'm just I'm curious what what they saw because obviously the the call on the floor was nope, balls out, game over. You watch it from the end line, the sideline, it kind of looks like it sails past Cam Thorne. Obviously, there was something enough to overturn that in his in his mind, and I'd love to know. Yeah, you know.

Yeah, it isn't an interesting one of why why don't you just show and and they do that for the women's uh replays in Stanford? They actually show the replays. They show the what they're watching, right? They actually show the cameras so you can see, and it's like people are ooing and awing, like, no, no touch.

Yeah, that's and that's what you're looking for from a fan experience and from a TV experience too. It's like let us see what you're seeing, also, yep, so that we're not guessing like what's happening here.

I mean, all these all these cameras are not like crazy high speed. That like this is a lower budget replay system, yes, right? When you could watch like VNL or the Olympics or whatever, like that's that's a lot of money to put in all those cameras, but you know, you can't have something that has the ability to overturn a match and then like kind of be like, I don't know, you know, it's probably like two-thirds, you know what, yeah good enough or whatever. So irrefutable evidence, I believe, is the standard. It didn't I felt like I could have refuted. Yeah, yeah.

The Mental Whiplash After Overturns

It was an interesting one. We've seen a couple we've seen a couple of those those situations before, but man, that was on the timing on that one was insane. The the thing that I was talking about, we were we had a tournament the next day, and I was talking with a bunch of coaches who had had watched the game. Like the just think of the feeling of what UCLA had there of just an absolute battle on your home court. You you see the you see the final four on your in your home arena, and what has been an incredible season for you. It's like right there, and you have to get past this test, and you get it. Game over, done, elated, guard comes down, and then all of a sudden, a minute later, you gotta try and throw the guard back up, and Irvine now has this second wind of like we we lost, but now we're alive and we get to go again. House money. It's a exactly house money, let it rip. And sure enough, like the next the next three points were so evident of they just they they had mentally had had cashed out. I wouldn't say they checked out, I don't blame them. Like they could they just got cashed out, they put everything on the table and then lost it. It's like how do you rebound from that?

It really showed how mental of a game volleyball is, like you just see it like on their everybody, the way that everybody reacted to all of it was like evident of the like you I don't know if you can prepare your team for a moment like that. Yep.

And then it gets posted by ESPN. Man, man, men's volleyball is having a moment, guys. Jordan Lucas and and referees making weird calls. We've got we got great things going on. It's great for the game.

It sucks for people that are involved in some of the situations, but it is also you need that to happen.

Bracket Reset And Final Four Stakes

Yes, there's there's definitely drama, and now the table has been set for our final four, and I think it's time. We've got we got we got to get into our predictions here, but before we do, we're we're gonna put a little challenge out for everyone. We're gonna put our last chance bracket up online. So if you want to go back, go back in and put your final four predictions in. If you were one of the many people who either picked UCLA or Belmont, you can go back in and try again. But we'll get ourselves into our predictions here. Uh and we're gonna we're good going on.

Yeah, there's nine perfect brackets remaining for men. In our women's bracket, quick shout out for the women's speech volleyball. Uh, we had two perfect brackets that uh that picked everything correct for the women's speech volleyball, where UCLA defeated Stanford in three to win the national championship this year for women's speech. So yeah, there's still still a couple remaining.

Oh man. So I've got I've got Long Beach coming out of these two, I think. Um I think they are they're peaking at the right time right now. I think McRae as a first year head coach has done a really nice job keeping that ship steady and improving all year.

Once Nip takes off his jacket, you know, sure. Absolutely, yeah. Um and then you're just you're in this self-fulfilling prophecy of, you know, the team that won it wins it again, you know, back to back. So I think I think they're playing their best ball right now. They've they've had Hawaii's number as of late. And then I think once they get past Hawaii, I think it's gonna be I I'm taking Irvine to get past Ball State. And they've had Irvine's number I think basically all season, but they beat him three times, right? They had him in the back to back and then they played him in the first round of Big West. I think four in a row. So I'm on uh I'm on the it's not the dirtbags, but what are they sharks? Yeah, whatever. I'm on Long Beach State for that. Fair enough. All right, AG.

And I think it's hard to beat a believing freight train when all of the teams are kind of in a similar nobody's better than anybody. I also think that anybody could take it. Like I think that this is all four teams are this is anybody's you can put two good matches together, you're gonna win a national championship. I don't think there's anybody in your way that's like an absolute boulder of a team.

And um yeah, I think watching uh them against USC, they you know, they they played pretty consistently. Um Roar money from the service line. I think he had seven aces in that match. So um, you know, I've loved what he's done all season. He's been pretty consistent for them as well. And so um yeah, we've got a win. There you go.

All right, well, I'll round, I'll round it out because I've got I've got I've got my pick, everyone. I've got my pick. Uh my Mastrodomus, my Mastrodomus pick is going to go to the Cardinals. Ball State is who I'm gonna go with. And this podcast knows, if you've been a loyal listener, you you know this is a Patrick Rogers house. I'm a big fan. The first time, first surprise edit I ever made was was was with Patrick Rogers as the uh the starting point. Uh the boy can just ball. He didn't have his greatest match against uh Pepperdine, but you could tell the gamer that he is by the way that he finished it, two walk-off aces. And I just love the the story, the collision course of what I see of ball state versus Hawaii. Ball State versus Donan. I don't know what went on there, what transpired. It's all uh it's a veil of mystery to me, but I just know that there's gonna be some fireworks if and when that happens. And I feel I feel like ball state is also on the house money train right now. Everyone has kind of counted them out. They're the underdog, they've got the chip on their shoulder, and the way that they played against Pepperdine was very impressive.

To be locked in, that's huge. Hey, yeah, it was literally that that could have been the the biggest controversy of it all, uh, but it got completely overshadowed. But at the same time, it's it's a testament to kind of the personalities that go to ball state. There's there's definitely a degree of kind of the grittiness, the guys that aren't your it's not a blue chip recruit land like the UCLA's or the USCs.

Sean Kelly was not deciding between ball state and UCLA. Yeah, that's what I heard.

Yes, exactly. But they have proven this year in particular, right, with a roster that last year lost in the first round of the Miva playoffs, which was pretty much the exact same roster, looking real nice. And they have found they have found their groove, they can bring heat from the service line, they've got multiple pins that can score, and their middles are effective. So I think it's it's one of those ones where if if you got a fur vest guy gets fired up on the stands, they're they're probably not gonna travel as well as the Hawaii's and the Long Beaches and the Irvines that are are local and close, but uh the crowd that does go, it's not a it's not the size of the dog. It's the size of the fight. And my boys are gonna fight. So ball state and five. Here we go.
